Hello to all my Blog Readers~
We are ready to build a better library and excitement is growing! Downes Construction Company has installed their field trailer. We thank Dwight Harris for his generosity in allowing us to use his field.  In a few weeks Downes will be breaking ground behind us.  We will be adding a larger community room and extending the children’s department to include a program room for children and teens.  We will also have a cool Teen Zone!  In addition, we will have a better organized Burlington Room, our local history department.  All of our new materials will be available to borrow, while our non-new adult materials will be in conditioned storage. Children’s and teen materials will be available, and we will continue to offer programs. Please come visit us; we will be happy to borrow materials from another library if we don’t have it here.  Questions are always welcomed.

Hello Burlington Friends and Neighbors!

It has been a long time since I have written with news about our expansion. We are moving along quite nicely with our plans now that we have worked out all the compliance issues associated with renovating a public space. Downes Construction Company (DCC), our Construction Managers,  posted legal notices in the Hartford Courant on January 28 & 29 asking interested companies to submit bids to our Town Hall by 2 pm on Thursday, February 23, 2017.

Once all the bids are vetted, our goal is to start construction in April on the two expanded wings of the library. The next step will be to start to reconfigure the original interior of the library, creating exciting new spaces such as a Teen Room and Study Rooms, while better organizing the Burlington Room, our Local History Department.  DCC will work around our needs so as to be as unobtrusive as possible. We may periodically need to close the library for an occasional partial day or days, but our goal is to remain open throughout construction. DCC’s timeline finishes the building by October.

Excitement is growing as we get closer to putting a shovel into the ground.

Below are the plans for the wonderful new expansion.  Feel free to ask us questions.

Regards,  Marie Spratlin Hasskarl

Our first “Friends” of the Library donation to the NEW Teen Room by Andrew Ouellette!

Andrew Ouellette, a 15 year-old Burlington resident, spent this past spring volunteering to work at the Burlington Little League “snack shack” on Library Lane. With his Mom’s help he purchased and stocked the shack with beverages and snacks, then volunteered over fifty hours selling these items to players and fans who attended the games. Andrew carefully kept track of all his expenditures and daily sales. By the end of the season he had made a profit of $700.00.

Giving to the community is important to the Ouellette family so Andrew chose to split his profits and give $350 to the Burlington Friends of the Library and $350 to the Burlington Food Bank. Andrew, who is also volunteering to help out at the library this summer, has decided that his donation will go towards outfitting the new Teen Room. The expansion is expected to be complete by 2017.

We are extremely proud to have Andrew as part of our community and very happy that he has chosen the public library to show his appreciation and support.
